Surrey Quays takes its name from the former Surrey Commercial Docks, which shaped London’s maritime trading landscape from the 17th to the 20th century. The area formed part of the larger Rotherhithe peninsula, where ships brought timber from Scandinavia and Canada, creating one of London’s busiest working dockyards.
After the docks’ closure in 1969, the area underwent substantial regeneration in the 1980s and early 1990s. The former working docks were transformed into residential developments and recreational spaces, with Greenland Dock – London’s oldest wet dock – preserved as a water feature and sailing venue. Russia Dock Woodland, once a commercial basin, became an ecological park, marking a dramatic shift from the area’s industrial past.
