Curious about the old riverside streets around Narrow Street and Limehouse’s past as London’s first Chinatown? This guide covers transport, property prices and local life in this part of Tower Hamlets. Keep reading to see what Limehouse has to offer.
Limehouse sits on the north bank of the Thames in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, a short walk west of Canary Wharf and directly across the water from Rotherhithe. Wapping and Shadwell lie to the west, Poplar sits to the east, and the Limehouse Link tunnel runs beneath much of the area, connecting the City to the Docklands business district. The name comes from the lime kilns that operated here from the fourteenth century, producing lime for mortar and pottery, and the first wharf on the site dates back to 1348.
By the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Limehouse had grown into one of London’s busiest maritime districts, with shipbuilders, ropemakers and dockworkers settling along the river. Narrow Street still holds one of the last surviving early Georgian terraces on this stretch of the Thames, and its houses look out over Limehouse Basin, once known as Regent’s Canal Dock. The basin linked river traffic with barges heading into the canal network and closed as a working dock in the late 1960s. It now operates as a marina.
From the 1880s until the 1960s, Limehouse was London’s first Chinatown, home to a tightly-knit Chinese population who worked in the docks and ran shops and laundries along Limehouse Causeway and Pennyfields. Slum clearance and bomb damage during the Second World War pushed much of this population out towards Soho, but street names such as Canton Street, Pekin Street and Ming Street still mark where they lived.
As you’d expect for an area wedged between the Thames and Canary Wharf, Limehouse has plenty of options for getting around.
Life in Limehouse combines quick trips into Canary Wharf and the City with quieter, closer-to-home streets and a slower pace by the water.
Property styles in Limehouse: Housing in Limehouse ranges from early Georgian terraces along Narrow Street to large-scale wharf conversions and modern riverside apartment blocks.
Many of the area’s flats sit in former warehouses such as Free Trade Wharf and Dundee Wharf, built with tall windows and exposed brickwork from their days handling cargo off the Thames.
Inland, Victorian terraced houses around Clemence Street and Wallwood Street offer more traditional family homes, while newer developments close to Commercial Road and the DLR bring purpose-built flats aimed at first-time buyers and professionals working in Canary Wharf.
Limehouse’s landmarks trace its path from a medieval riverside settlement to London’s first Chinatown, and from a working dock to the marina and Georgian streets that line the water today.
The Old Ship – a proper East End boozer on Barnes Street known for its wide range of real ales, fresh filled rolls and regular LGBT+ cabaret nights.
The Grapes – a historic riverside pub on Narrow Street dating back over 500 years, once frequented by Charles Dickens and now co-owned by Sir Ian McKellen, serving famous fish and chips and pub grub.
The Queens Head – a Grade II listed corner pub on Flamborough Street reopened by locals in 2023, offering a contemporary take on classic pub fare and known as one inspiration behind EastEnders’ Queen Vic.
The Star of the East – a 19th century pub on Commercial Road with a secret garden and function rooms, serving classic pub food, pizzas and cocktails alongside regular events.

Oliver Jaques offer a range of services to sellers and landlords across Limehouse – get answers to common questions about these services below.
As one of London’s longest-serving independent estate agencies, we’ve built our reputation on genuine customer care, reflected in our Google review rating of 4.8. Our reputation extends across Limehouse’s riverside community, from the period townhouses of Narrow Street to the newer developments around the Basin.
Our valuers bring a combined 50-plus years’ experience of the East London market, backed by detailed local data. Limehouse’s stock is unusually varied for the area, spanning Georgian riverside houses, converted warehouse lofts near the marina and newer-build apartments, so getting the price right depends on genuinely understanding which of these you’re selling.
Yes, every viewing is accompanied by a member of our team, with at least half an hour allocated so buyers have proper time to take in the property, whether that’s a marina-view apartment or a period house on Narrow Street.
Yes, we’re members of the Property Ombudsman, which means every sale we handle in Limehouse and along the wider Thames-side East London corridor follows best practice and meets all legal obligations.
We follow a strict registration process to gather the necessary information on every potential buyer. Once an offer comes in, buyers are referred to our financial services department for full qualification before anything is put to you as the seller.
Your property goes out across all the major portals, including Rightmove, OnTheMarket, Zoopla and PrimeLocation, giving it strong visibility not just locally but among the wider pool of buyers working in and around the area.
Our interactive Streets app gives you access to the latest information on your sale whenever you need it, backed up by a team that prides itself on clear communication at every stage.
Yes. Our offices stay open into the early evening and over weekends, which matters in an area like Limehouse where many buyers and sellers work City or Canary Wharf hours and can’t always view during the day.
Yes. We work with a panel of solicitors we’ve built strong relationships with over many years, known for being responsive throughout. For mortgages, we work with Chancery Mortgages, an established firm with over 40 years in the business.
Senior members of our team stay attached to your sale from listing to completion. Our dedicated sales progressor works closely with both sides’ solicitors to keep things moving and see the transaction through to a successful close.
Demand is dominated by professionals working in the City, particularly in financial and professional services, drawn by the short DLR hop to Bank and Canary Wharf and the C2C line into Fenchurch Street. The Basin’s riverside setting also pulls in tenants after a quieter, more residential feel than the Docklands core.
On average, 5 to 10 days. Viewing availability from any current occupiers and the schedules of prospective tenants can shift that slightly, but we consistently deliver fast results for landlords in the area.
This depends heavily on the property type. Warehouse and wharf conversions near the Basin tend to suit fully furnished lettings, since many tenants are relocating for Canary Wharf roles and want a turnkey move-in. The Georgian houses along Narrow Street, by contrast, more often attract longer-term tenants who prefer to bring their own furniture, so unfurnished tends to work better there.
Limehouse’s lettings market is shaped more by the Canary Wharf corporate calendar than by the academic year. There are notable upticks in January and September, when banks and financial firms onboard new staff, with a quieter spell during the summer when many City and Wharf-based tenants are away on leave.
On average around 300 new applicants register each month across the areas we cover, with as many as 500 actively searching at any one time.
A high proportion let within the first fortnight. Accurate pricing, strong marketing to the strong tenant pool, and our team’s local knowledge all contribute to fast, successful lets for our landlords.
