Get answers to common questions about Bermondsey.
Bermondsey is in South East London, part of the London Borough of Southwark. It sits south of the River Thames, between London Bridge/Tower Bridge and Southwark Park, with easy access to central London and Canary Wharf.
Many residents and visitors describe Bermondsey as a cool, lively, and increasingly desirable area with a mix of historic streets, converted warehouses, modern flats, and strong community character.
Its proximity to central London, excellent transport links, riverside walks, markets, galleries and food culture make it popular with young professionals and families alike — though, like any inner-city locale, some pockets feel busier or more mixed than others.
Bermondsey is in London Underground Fare Zone 2 on the Jubilee Line (Bermondsey station), meaning good transport links and relatively central pricing for travelcards and single fares.
Bermondsey has undergone significant regeneration over the past decade, and many parts feel safe and vibrant, especially around Bermondsey Street, Spa Road and the riverside areas.
Crime levels are broadly similar to other inner London neighbourhoods, with occasional street crime and anti-social behaviour typical of urban areas. Local policing initiatives and improved public spaces contribute to a sense of safety, but, as in any big city, staying aware of your surroundings — especially at night — is wise.
No — Bermondsey lies just outside the London Congestion Charge Zone. However, it’s inside the ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone), which applies 24/7 to most vehicles, so charging may still apply to higher-emission cars.
