Bow Quarter

733 apartments, penthouses and 19 townhouses, together with a handful of workers' cottages, redeveloped by Kentish Homes in the late 1980's.

Originally the Bryant and May match factory, and the site of the Match Girls’ strike in the 1880s, the Bow Quarter is now a stunning collection of 733 apartments, penthouses and 19 townhouses, together with a handful of workers’ cottages, redeveloped by Kentish Homes in the late 1980’s.

Set within 7 acres of landscaped gardens, and with the factory buildings having a Grade II listed status, the residents enjoy a 24-hour concierge service, leisure centre with gymnasium, swimming pool and sauna, on-site convenience store, laundry rooms, and secure parking.

The Vision

The site had fallen into disrepair when in 1988, developers Kentish Homes, with designs from architect Oliver Richards, began one of East London’s first urban renewal projects.

A large number of the flats are now located in Grade II listed factory and office buildings. The Arlington Building, for example, was built as offices in 1874, whilst the Lexington and Manhattan Buildings date from the factory site redevelopment in 1911. The Victorian cottages near the entrance provided accommodation for the workers, whilst the Staten Building was built as extra office accommodation in the late 1950s. The Park West, East, and Central buildings were added in the 1990’s.
